RICHARD COUSE HEADS JACOM TROPHY QUALIFIERS WITH NETT 64

The Jacom Trophy Qualifier played on Saturday 27th October saw good scoring in spite of near gale conditions with the top 16 places in the medal competition going forward to the Matchplay knockout round. Forty six players competed in a single division with players needing to shoot nett 71 or better to qualify with the top three places all reducing their playing handicaps. First place went to Richard Couse (18) scoring an excellent 64 with James Sanders (7) taking the lowest gross and second place with a 65. Third place went to Pete Miller (16) putting in a 66 closely followed by Myles Taylor (5) coming in fourth on 67 ahead of Adam Keen (12), Bill Lavers (13) and Nick Punter (13) all with the same score. To view the Matchplay draw go to the club website (www.freshwaterbaygolfclub.co.uk) and click on Secretary’s Diary/Latest News.

LADIES FRIENDLY MATCHES 2007

We played away to Osborne, Cowes, Highcliff Castle, Cams Hall and Shanklin with home matches against Newport, Ryde and Cowes. It was a good season with players taking part who were new to golf. Results were excellent; we never lost a match – 4 wins and 4 draws. Matches were played in a friendly atmosphere with Matchplay format thus helping our new members experience head to head match conditions. They all enjoyed the matches and are already looking forward to next year.

For the first time Freshwater Ladies were invited to play in a Scratch friendly v Shanklin, this involved our more experienced players mostly chosen from the Stoneham Cup Team. It was competitive but also enjoyable, we lost 4/3 (next year we host the match – blow wind blow!!!) but have great expectations for the future.

Ladies Vice Captain

DEREK WRIGHT TAKES MONTHLY MEDAL WITH GROSS 66.

The best golf of the week was played on Sunday in the Monthly Medal with 39 players competing in a single division. An honourable mention goes to Tony Jones and Bill Lavers both returning nett 66 for third and fourth place respectively. Second place went to Dave Wright on 65 but first place went to younger brother Derek playing off of 3 handicap who returned a gross 66 (nett 63) to deservedly take the top spot in the competition.

Saturday was much more light hearted with the annual Trafalgar Scramble where you take the tee shots in turn rather than picking the best, the consolation is that there is a broadside hole where your points count double. Forty five players competed in teams of three with the husband and wife pairing of Rita and Dennis Smith helped by Kev Garrett coming out on top with 53 points their broadside hole nominated before play scoring a massive 10 points. Second place went to Vice Captain Bill Hinchen’s team made up with Keith and Derek Wright on 50 points. Three teams tied on 49 points with Russell MacGregor, Tim Harmer and Robbie Faulkner coming out on top on the back nine, commiserations go to Pete Cooper, Steve Orchard and Tony Black as well as fifth placed team of Keith Kimber, Colin Balfour and Dave Cooke.

The Midweek Medal played on Wednesday 17th saw more restrained scoring with Seniors Captain John Davis taking the first division with a nett 69 followed by Dave Morey in second carding a 71 and Derek Worsley in third on 72. Division Two was won by Peter Dawson with the best score of the day nett 68 two shots clear of Ray Cooke 70 in second place followed by Keith Brown finishing in third on the better back nine from Tim Deville, both players carding a nett 72.

PETER COOPER SNATCHES SUMMER ECLECTIC FROM PLAYING PARTNER BY A SINGLE SHOT

The hotly contested Summer Eclectic was this year won by a single shot with Steve Orchard carding the lowest gross (57) but being beaten by a single shot by regular playing partner Peter Cooper scoring a net 52.5 to Steve’s 53.5. Third and fourth places went to Dick Downes and Dave Wilkins respectively both scoring 55.5 net.

This week the Midweek Stableford set a high scoring pace with Division One won with 42 points by Keith Brown closely followed in second by Pieter Sheldon on 40 edging out Ken Bebbington to third spot on count back. Division Two went to Richard Couse returning 41 points 3 shots clear of nearest rival Ray Cooke in second on 38 and Tim Deville in third with 36 points.

Saturday saw the best round of the week played by Graham Wells returning an excellent 43 points to take first place in Division One, second place went to John Crosbie on 41 with James Sanders scoring 39 points to take third spot from Colin Jones on the back nine. Division Two was a father and son affair with Stephen Cooke beating his dad Gary by a single shot for the top spot on 39 points, third place going to Kasey Tuckey on 37.

The Sunday Stableford was a repeat of the day before for John Crosbie finishing in second place again in Division One this time with 38 points pipped to the post by Keith Wright carding 39. Barry Crook and Frank Ing were tied for third spot with 37 points with Barry coming out on top on count back. Martin Brett took the top spot in Division Two with 41 points a mere shot ahead of Barney Barnes on 40, Malc Williams finished in third place with 38 points.

HIGH SCORING WEEK FOR FRESHWATER MEMBERS

Kind weather and a Freshwater course in excellent condition produced some fine scoring over the few days.

Best round of the week goes to Myles Taylor in the Midweek Stableford winning Division one with 43 points off 6 handicap but more impressively carding a gross 66, second was Keith Wright on 40 with third place going to Derek Worsley on 39 points on count back from Graham Wells and Colin Jones.

Division Two was won by Ken Johnson with 40 points followed by Rob Jackson on 39 with John Wisker taking third on 37 beating Ray Cooke on the back nine.

Friday saw this month’s Veterans Stableford, John Veal took the honours with 39 points from Ray Cooke on count back. Rays lead on the Ogle tankards has stretched to 13 points fro John Mew in 2nd place with one round left to play. Pete Cooper is making a late charge with in 5 points of Mew after carding 37 points beating Richard Couse and John Wisker on the back nine.

Division One of the Saturday Stableford went to Adam Keen with 42 points with Keith Wright one point behind in second. Third place went to Chris pink on 38, with yet again a bevy of players beaten on the back nine, no prizes for Myles Taylor, John Crosbie, Derek Wright or Richard Frost all with 38 points.

Division Two saw the highest total of the day with Chris Tansley taking the money with 43 points ahead of Kasey Tuckey on 41 and Richard Couse on 39.

Reynolds par 4 hole in one helps Freshwater to Alliance Shield victory.

FRESHWATER BAY GOLF CLUB – ALLIANCE SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER

Freshwater Bay Golf Club played host to the final 36 hole event of the Alliance year played in benign conditions with the course and greens in particular in fine condition. The winners in each competition are awarded points Formula One style throughout the year with the Alliance Shield presented to the Club amassing the most points over the whole year. Going into the final round Shanklin had a ten point lead over holders Freshwater with a total of 32 points available on the day

The morning event was the Fowler Cup a greensome medal won with the impressive score of nett 58 by Freshwater pair Pete Reynolds and Ant Roper. Shot of the day must go to Pete who holed his tee shot at the 273 yard par 4 16th. Three pairs tied on 62 with Andy Hallam and Matt Williams of Osborne coming second on count back followed by Steve Burke and Brian Wells of Ventnor then Freshwater pair Simon Fisher and Dick Leppard. The quality of the scoring was such that three more pairs were tied with nett 63. This meant that Shanklin’s lead had been cut to only 2 points with all to play for after lunch.

The afternoon event was the much tougher foursome medal format with the early pace being set at 70 carded by morning winners Reynolds and Roper along with another Freshwater pairing of Miles Oldershaw and Jim Whitehead, closely followed by Shanklin pair Roy Truman and Steph Brochocki on 71.5 keeping the Shanklin’s hope of winning the shield well and truly alive until the final few groups. Osborne pairing of Darren Masterton and Brian Yelland eventually took third place with a 69 but the West Wight Foursomes Trophy went to Osborne pair of Pete Wright and Ian Taylor with an excellent score of 66.5 especially when you consider they finished last in the easier morning event! Last pair out John Burke and Danny Holmes of Freshwater fired in a nett 68 for second place and to steal the Shield from Shanklin’s grasp at the eleventh hour, quite a feat when you consider they had never played together before

Final shield points were Freshwater 56, Shanklin 51 and Osborne third on 33. In the presentation speeches particular mention was made of the fine weather, the impressive condition of the Freshwater course and the ever present organisation skills of Vic Treadwell who masterminds the entire year from entries to results.
