GARRETT HAS BUMPER BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Seventy eight players took advantage of the fine weather and a course in
excellent condition to compete in Ernie's Two Ball Scramble on Bank Holiday
Monday. Nearest the pin on the 14th hole was held for most of the day by
Tony Keen that was until his son Adam almost last out had a go and put his
tee shot to 7ft to claim the prize. Not to be out done Mum Sue Keen was also
in fine form taking second place in the Ladies section with a nett 69.2
partnered by Ann Smith, first place went to Pat Long and Claire Hearn with a
67.4.



Scoring was extremely competitive with the first four pairs all with in a
shot and a half of each other, Kevin Garrett and Kevin McArthur took pride
of place overall with an excellent nett 61 only a quarter of a shot ahead of
second place John Veal and Barry Hunter. Third place went to Derek Wright
and Kasey Tuckey returning a 62.2 with Paul Gardner and Barry Crook in
fourth on 62.4.



Kevin Garrett (6) also performed well in the Sunday Stableford the day
before taking first place in Division 1 with 36 points, a good round in
itself considering the weather and the fact that the Competition Standard
Scratch went up from 68 to 70, second place going to Derek Wright (4) with
33 points and brother Keith picking up third spot with 31 points off of his
six handicap.



Division 2 produced the highest score of the day with Pieter Sheldon (17)
taking the honours with 37 points followed by John Riddelsdell (21) on 32
and finally John Meredith (23) in third on 31 points.



The Mid Week Stableford played on Wednesday 19th March saw 34 entries split
into two divisions with Richard Couse (18) recording the best round of the
day to take first place in Division 2 with 39 points, in second was Pete
Bryan (19) with 37 points and Mark Pearce (26) in third with 34. Division 1
was a close run thing with John Veal scoring 36 points off of 14 handicap to
finish a shot ahead of second placed Derek Wright (4) on 35 getting the
better of Keith Wright (6) on count back.

PETE BRYAN MAKES THE MOST OF THE GOOD WEATHER

Due to inclement weather this week only one competition was played; the Saturday Stableford on the 15th March which had 32 entries which was split into two divisions – Div 1 0-13 handicap and Div 2 for players in the range 14-28.


Nick Riby (12) took first place in Division One narrowly beating Les Mew (13) on count back with both players returning 38 points. Third place went to Kevin Garrett with 37 points playing off five handicap with three players tied for fourth place on 36 points Keith Wright (12), Colin Jones (13) and Richard Frost (5).


In Division Two Pete Bryan made the most of the fine weather returning 40 points off his 20 handicap (now 19!) to take pride of place ahead of no less than three 14 handicappers, Kevin Miles finished in second place on 38 points, third going to Hugh Morrison with 37 and finally Dave Wright in fourth scoring 36 points.

CONVINCING WIN SEES KEITH WRIGHT CUT TO SIX

This week the Mid Week Medal at Freshwater Bay was won convincingly by Keith Wright with a nett 63 reducing his handicap down to six, second and third places in Division One were fought over by the Captain and Vice Captain with Club Captain Bill Hinchen (6) having to step aside for his Vice Barry Hunter (13) on count back with both players carding 66s’. Thirty members entered the event with Division Two being won by Pete Miller (16) with a 67 followed by Bob Godden (21) on 68 and third place won on the back nine by Ray Cooke (16) from Ken Johnson (19) both players finishing on 71.



The March Veterans Stableford was played on Friday 7th March with the first three players all reducing their playing handicaps, of the twenty eight entries Ken Johnson again featured this time in pole position with the best stableford round of the week an excellent 42 points one point ahead of John Hill (26) on 41 with third place going to Peter Warr (19) scoring 38 points. No change at the top of the Ogle Tankards with Frank Gregory still leading with 134 points but last years winner Ray Cooke moves menacingly into second place with 130 points ahead of John Mew on 124 in third spot.



Only fifteen players competed in the Monthly Medal on Saturday due to inclement weather and the scoring was justifiably high with the competition classed as a reduction only. Four handicap Derek Wright took first place and the prize for lowest gross with his net 72 while two players tied on 73 with Colin Jones (10) picking up second place on count back from John Burke (12).



Sunday saw the return of better weather and subsequently better scoring from the thirty three players in the Stableford competition. Highest score of the day was returned by Malc Williams (18) in Division Two taking first place with 41 points, second went to Gordon Day on 39 and third to Frank Gregory with 35 points. In Division One Nick Punter took pride of place with 40 points off twelve handicap followed by Peter Cooper (16) in second with 38 points. Four players tied on 34 points with Simon Fisher (14) finishing in third place beating Graham Wells, Nick Riby and Keith Wright on count back

SCOTT AND MORRISON CLEAN UP WITH 40 POINTS

Thirty members entered Freshwater Bay Golf Club’s Mid Week Stableford played on Wednesday 27th February with the best round of the day recorded by Peter Scott (22), amassing 40 points to take first place in Division 2. Barney Barnes (17) finished in second place with 39 points ahead of three players on 37 points, Richard Couse taking the remaining prize off of 18 handicap on count back from Frank Gregory and Dennis Smith. Thirty seven points was good enough for Division 1 as well with all three places decided on count back, first was Keith Wright (6) followed by Miles Oldershaw (9) in second and Kev Garrett (5) in third.



Again on the Saturday in the Stableford competition was won with 40 points with first place going to Hugh Morrison (15), Kevin MacArthur (10) in second with 37 points and third going to John Veal (13) finishing ahead of Chris Tansley and Kev Garrett on count back all scoring 36 points. In Division 2 Steven Cooke (26) continued his handicap descent with 39 points in first place, Dennis Smith finished second off of 20 handicap with 36 points followed by Steve Sargeant (18) in third with 33 points.



A fun Better Ball Stableford was held on Sunday with 28 entries, closely fought with only two points separating the first four pairs. Coming out on top were Simon Smith and Dick Downes with a very useful 45 points one point ahead of second placed Nick Punter and Stuart Dyer, third spot went to Steve Sargeant and Kev Garrett with 43 points on the back nine from Barry Hunter and Dave Wright - 22 to 20.
